San Diego’s Health and Human Services Agency is working with USD to provide free vaccinations to students to prevent the highly contagious virus from spreading.
“Several colleges and universities across the country are currently having mumps outbreaks,” said Wilma Wooten, MD, MPH, county public health officer, in the County News Center. “Spring break is going to bring an opportunity for this disease to spread, so students should be sure they are up to date with mumps and all other recommended vaccines.”
A suspected mumps outbreak is currently under investigation at SUNY Buffalo in New York. Confirmed outbreaks have occurred at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., the University of Kentucky in Lexington and three universities in Indiana.
