Mountainside Medical Center's rounding initiative raises patient satisfaction to 90%

Patient satisfaction jumped to 90 percent after Montclair, N.J.-based Hackensack Meridian Health Mountainside Medical Center implemented an initiative to improve bedside rounding.

Here are three things to know.

1. Mountainside Medical Center implemented the initiative, Highly Reliable Rounding, in 2016. Initial results showed patient satisfaction rates at 83 percent, which have since improved to 90 percent.

  1. Highly Reliable Rounding offers a multidisciplinary approach to bedside rounding that boosts care coordination, encourages patient-centered care and improves health outcomes.

  1. The initiative focuses on sharing real-time information between all the patient's caregivers, performing quality safety checks and engaging in discharge planning to ensure safe care transitions.

"Highly Reliable Rounding is a work in progress that requires teamwork and constant reevaluation with a goal of fostering improved interdisciplinary communication between each stakeholder," said Valerie Allusson, MD, vice president of clinical effectiveness and medical affairs at Mountainside Medical Center. "Our vision is to have multidisciplinary teams using systemwide resources to deliver the right care at the right place for every patient, at the right time, with the right cost and the right transition of care."
