Missouri VA 1st to finish 'Hospital of the Future' project

Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans' Hospital became the first VA hospital to complete the "Hospital of the Future" project — an initiative that aims to improve veteran care, the Columbia Missourian reports.

The Columbia, Mo.-based hospital completed the project Dec. 31.

In January 2016, the hospital became the first veterans' hospital in the nation to formally collaborate with the VA National Center for Patient Safety for the project.

Hospital of the Future initiatives focus on three main categories: leadership engagement, widespread staff participation and implementation of "just culture" principles.

"The key to practicing just culture is to create an environment where staff understand they should continuously analyze and report issues without fear of retaliation," said David Isaacks, director of the Truman VA. "That doesn't mean our culture is blame-free. It means we work to balance the cause of each error with an appropriate response that eliminates recurrence."

New processes the Truman VA initiated include:

  • Physician-led daily briefings in the acute medicine unit
  • New projects to include palliative care, outpatient care and patient-aligned care teams
  • Increased access for audiology patients
