Ms. Coleman graduated from Alton (Ill.) Memorial Hospital’s school of nursing in 1947.
“Back then, it was a three-year live-in program, lights were out at 10 [p.m.] and you had to have permission to go home for a visit,” she told AdVantage News. “I don’t think people would go for that today.”
Ms. Coleman officially retired from nursing in 2001 at age 75. However, her retirement didn’t last long. She is now one of four nurses who work part-time administering medications to patients at The William M. BeDell Achievement and Resource Center in Wood River, Ill.
With 72 years of nursing experience under her belt, Ms. Coleman said she plans to work at the health center for as long as she can.
