The case marks the first confirmed measles infection in eastern Nebraska in two years, according to NBC Nebraska.

“Measles is starting to make a little bit of a rise because there are people, who aren’t being immunized,” said Kendra Hansen, a Communicable Disease Analyst with the Two Rivers Public Health Department, which serves counties in the eastern part of the state, according to NBC Nebraska. “Last year, tentative numbers that we have, there was approximately 70 cases throughout the United States. This year so far, there’s about 21 cases.”
Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that causes symptoms like fever, runny nose, cough and a rash that spreads all over the body. The illness can be fatal.
