Massachusetts reports 1st measles case

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health confirmed April 1 that one person has been diagnosed with measles in the greater Boston area.

The person was diagnosed March 31. It was determined that other people may have been exposed to this person at several locations, including Plymouth, Mass., Waltham, Mass., and Hyannis, Mass.

The news comes in the midst of measles outbreaks in several U.S. states. The CDC reported 387 total measles cases in 15 states between Jan. 1 and March 28, up from the 372 total cases reported in all of 2018. The number of cases in 2019 is the second highest reported since 2000.

Measles is highly contagious, and the CDC recommends getting vaccinated with the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine.
