Maryland hospitals reduce infections, readmission rates

Maryland hospitals are making significant strides in improving patient safety and overall hospital quality, according to a Maryland Hospital Association report cited by WVNews.com.

The MHA's report highlights the results of statewide efforts to improve care quality, with a focus on reducing readmissions and hospital-acquired infections.

Three report findings:

1. From 2013 to 2017, Maryland hospitals saw an 8.2 percent decline in Medicare readmissions.

2. Maryland hospitals saw a 21.8 percent drop in Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and 12 percent reduction in Clostridioides difficile cases between 2015 and 2017.

3. Maryland was among the top 10 states in 2017 for the percentage of patients who received proper care for severe sepsis and septic shock.
