Powassan virus is a rare tick-borne illness that can cause long-term neurologic issues in patients. On average, the U.S. sees just seven cases of Powassan virus annually.
Maine has seen 11 Powassan cases since 2000, including one last month. The Maine CDC confirmed an adult patient was hospitalized with Powassan in late June.
Health officials are alerting Maine physicians of the case and encouraging them to consider testing for Powassan in patients presenting potential symptoms, which include fever, weakness and headaches.
