A complaint brought the inspectors to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg in Bethlehem, Pa., and Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest in Salisbury Township, Pa.
The report did not say whether the complaint came from a patient or employee, but it led to surprise inspections at the two hospitals in late June.
Inspectors documented unsanitary conditions in the cardiac intensive care unit and a nearby public women’s restroom at Cedar Crest and in Muhlenberg’s emergency department and patient unit.
Issues at the hospitals included debris in patient rooms, dusty medical equipment and a broken hand sanitizer dispenser.
The hospital corrected the issues and retrained staff on cleaning policies. Managers meet with cleaning staff each day for inspection.
