Forty hospitals were named to the list for the first time. Fifty-five hospitals were named 2013 Leapfrog Top Hospitals, while 22 hospitals and 13 hospitals made 2013 Leapfrog Top Rural Hospitals and 2013 Leapfrog Top Children’s Hospitals, respectively.
The group selected hospitals for the list based on prevention of medication errors, intensive care unit physician staffing, low mortality rates for high-risk procedures, high-value care, an “A” grade on Leapfrog’s Hospital Safety Score and embodiment of excellence, according to a news release.
