Iowa Surgeon Agrees to Pay $5K to Settle Allegations His Care Caused 6 Deaths

Robert K. Finley, III, MD, a general surgeon from Iowa, has agreed to pay $5,000 to settle allegations that his medical care led to the death of six patients, according to a Des Moines Register news report.

The Iowa Board of Medicine filed the complaint against Dr. Finley in 2010. In its complaint, the board accused Dr. Finley of making medical errors between Jan. 2005-Jan. 2006 in patient cases he should have passed on to surgical teams with more experience in complex procedures, such as cancer surgery, according to the news report.

Dr. Finley's attorney refuted those allegations, stating no patient or family has ever filed a malpractice claim against Dr. Finley and the confidential peer review of the patient cases, which took place at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, "were without merit." Dr. Finley has since voluntarily undergone retraining and performed well on a re-certification exam. He has denied all wrongdoing in the medical board's complaint against him.
