Researchers took data on 328,177 adults, 66 years or older, who underwent colonoscopy examinations in 2003. Region and Medicare carrier were the strongest indicators of anesthesia assistance, as the highest rates occurred in New Jersey and the lowest in Montana.
The study concluded that the use of anesthesia assistance did not alter the rate of polyps detection or the rate of GI bleeding, perforation or hospital visits within 30 days.
