Illinois Hospitals Release First-Time Data on C. Diff, MRSA Lab Test Rates

The Illinois Department of Public Health announced the publication of the first infection surveillance data on Clostridium difficile and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus rates from lab results available statewide.

This is the first year Illinois hospitals began reporting positive lab results for C. diff and MRSA; this data is available on the Illinois Hospital Report Card and Consumer Guide to Health Care website. In March, IDPH began an education campaign supported by funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to educate hospital employees on preventing the spread of C. diff.

While C. diff and MRSA data from lab results are new this year, IDPH has routinely collected hospital discharge data, which includes information on C. diff and MRSA rates. According to hospital discharge data, the rates of C. dif in Illinois have more than doubled over the past 10 years, while the rates of MRSA have remained relatively unchanged over the last three years, according to the release.
