Illinois hospitals reduce infections, improve quality, save $130M

The Illinois Hospital Engagement Network has announced $132.4 million in savings between January 2012 and June 2014 from 100 Illinois hospitals preventing more than 12,700 patient harms.

The prevented harms include:

11,023 readmissions

273 early-elective deliveries

264 central line-associated bloodstream infections

234 postoperative pulmonary embolisms or incidents of deep vein thrombosis

201 catheter-associated urinary tract infections

152 incidents of ventilator-associated pneumonia

147 surgical site infections

140 falls with injury prevented

126 birth trauma or injuries to neonates

123 pressure ulcers

46 manifestations of poor glycemic control
