IHI names safety culture innovator award recipients

The Institute for Healthcare Improvement and the National Patient Safety Foundation on Monday named the recipients of the IHI/NPSF Lucian Leape Institute Medtronic Safety Culture and Technology Innovator Awards.

The awards, given to a team and an individual, will be conferred Sept. 28 at the 10th Annual IHI/NPSF Lucian Leape Institute Forum and Keynote Dinner in Newton, Mass.

Peter Weinstock, MD, PhD, will receive the individual award for his work as anesthesia chair in pediatric simulation at Boston Children's Hospital. Under his leadership, the medical simulation program introduced capabilities such as 3-D printing of patient anatomy for surgical pre-planning and rapid prototyping of new medical devices.

Children's Hospital and Medical Center in Omaha, Neb., earned the team award for the use of electronic sensors and other technology to monitor provider hand hygiene compliance.

"Recognition of visionary and innovative health professionals motivates and inspires others to look beyond existing boundaries for solutions that support their overall safety culture," said Tejal K. Gandhi, MD, chief clinical and safety officer of IHI and president of the IHI/NPSF Lucian Leape Institute.
