Mumps case confirmed at University of Missouri-St. Louis

Officials at the University of Missouri-St. Louis recently confirmed a case of the mumps in a student. Two additional cases are suspected, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The university delivered letters to students, faculty and staff warning of possible mumps exposure. The letter asked those displaying possible mumps symptoms to contact their physician or the university's health services department.

The mumps is a viral illness spread via person-to-person contact and causes swelling of the salivary glands, fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness and loss of appetite.

In 2016, more than 200 people were infected with the mumps in an outbreak at the University of Missouri in Columbia.
