In a 2012 analysis of approximately 20,000 patients, researchers found patients who developed postoperative respiratory failure — which has been linked to preoperative pneumonia — had a 300-fold increase in 30-day mortality compared to patients who did not experience the condition, according to a study published in the journal Head & Neck.

While respiratory conditions place a significant burden on both hospitals and the patient, health systems can harness various tools to address this issue. The medical technology company Medtronic is partnering with acute care hospitals on an innovative quality improvement program geared toward reducing adverse events and patient length of stay by monitoring respiratory outcomes metrics.
During a Feb. 21 webinar, Dave Giarracco, vice president of Medtronic market development; Keith Morrison, senior global commercial marketing manager with Medtronic; Christine O’Farrell, director of quality management of Barton Healthcare in South Lake Tahoe, Calif.; Mary Kay Sennings, pulmonary services manager at Barton Health; and Dawn Evans, RN, patient safety officer with Barton Health, will discuss strategies acute care hospitals can use to improve the monitoring of respiratory outcomes. Topics will include benchmarking health measures against national or regional indicators, using capnography monitoring to improve respiratory health metrics and insights into the Medtronic quality improvement initiative.
