Houston Methodist unveils flu tracker website

Houston Methodist pathologists have created a website that tracks influenza cases in real time.

The website, flu.houstonmethodist.org, offers flu epidemiology data covering Houston Methodist's eight hospitals. The website is accessible via mobile devices and includes date interval and pathogen filters.

The creators of the website detailed their process in a Nov. 30 article in Open Forum Infectious Diseases. They began developing the resource during the 2017 flu season. The website provided information on influenza A, influenza B, respiratory syncytial virus and rhinovirus/enterovirus, among other pathogens. It helped physicians to treat patients in a timely manner as it offered up-to-date information on flu cases.

The website can also help public health officials and the general population monitor flu outbreaks during the season.
