Internists were not far behind family physicians in pay, as they averaged $219,500 in 2011. Other high-earning specialists included cardiologists ($422,921) and anesthesiologists ($372,750).
Additionally, there is expected to be a shortfall of 130,600 physicians across all specialties by 2025.
