UPMC hospital to close residency program

Pittsburgh-based UPMC plans to phase out the internal medicine residency program at McKeesport (Pa.) hospital, a spokesperson for the health system confirmed to Becker’s.

The decision is due to a declining population in McKeesport that has contributed to the overall decline in patients seen by the internal medicine residents.

UPMC McKeesport, a 176-bed facility, will no longer recruit new residents for the internal residency program, the health system said in a statement shared with Becker’s. Once the remaining residents complete their program, which is expected to be July 2027, the program will be discontinued.

The three-year program comprises 39 residents, 13 per year, according to UPMC’s website

“This does not impact the Family Medicine residency program, the Latterman Family Health Clinic, or the 9th Street Clinic,” according to UPMC, which said it “remains committed to providing a high-quality medical education and outstanding experience” for the next generation of physicians.
