Starting the summer 2015, Pittsburgh-based UPMC will launch a kidney transplant program at UPMC Hamot in Erie, Pa., according to a TribLive report.

The program — which marks the first time UPMC surgeons will perform organ transplant surgeries outside of Pittsburgh — was approved to operate by the United Network for Organ Sharing, a nonprofit organ transplant system.

UPMC officials believe the program will transfer care for roughly 250 patients from Pittsburgh to Erie, including patients under evaluation for transplants, patients on waiting lists and transplant patients receiving post-surgical care.

UPMC did not say how much it will cost to establish the program, according to the report.
