Both University of Minnesota Medical Center in Minneapolis and the Minnesota Heart Clinic, which is located at Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina, Minn., are affiliated with Fairview Health Services.

The merger, which has been discussed for two years, will create a 53-physician heart group named the University of Minnesota Physicians Heart at Fairview.

The new academic medical practice will be better poised to complete with Minneapolis Heart Institute due to its size and efforts to improve quality of care with standard protocols and a shared electronic health record, according to the report.
