Charlotte, N.C., was once the largest city in the U.S. without a four-year medical school. That changed in June, WCNC reported July 9.
The Pearl is a “medical innovation district” created by a public-private partnership between Charlotte-based Atrium Health and Wexford Science & Technology. At the center of the Pearl is the medical school itself — Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Charlotte, an extension of the Winston-Salem-based main campus.
On July 7, the school welcomed its inaugural class of nearly 50 students.
School officials told the news outlet they hope to increase enrollment to 100 students per class over the course of the next five years.
