Sacramento, Calif.-based Sutter Health and Santa Clara (Calif.) University are collaborating on a learning health system model designed to expose medical students to clinical care, education and research within an integrated healthcare network.
The model will be incorporated into the Mark & Mary Stevens School of Medicine, the first new MD-granting medical school in the San Francisco Bay Area in more than a century, according to a Sept. 10 report from the American Medical Association. The school, funded in part by a $175 million gift from Mark and Mary Stevens, will be embedded within Sutter’s integrated health system and build on its existing graduate medical education programs, which include more than 30 residency and fellowship programs.
The curriculum will emphasize behavioral science, health literacy, biomedical ethics, practice management, leadership, health system science and the responsible use of technology and AI.
Students will also participate in interdisciplinary, team-based training and could work on health system improvement projects beginning in their first year of medical school.
