Norfolk, Va.-based Sentara Health has started a new neurology residency program to expand the region’s access to advanced neurology care.

“There’s a huge shortage of neurologists, not just locally, but throughout the United States,” James Wyant, MD, director of the new program, said in a Sept. 10 news release.

Most of the time, neurology residents will train at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, with some training taking place at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital, Sentara CarePlex Hospital and Fort Norfolk Plaza. The program brings Virginia its fourth neurology residency program and comes as health systems brace for an increase in demand for neurological care, driven by the nation’s aging population.

The new program is part of Sentara’s broader efforts to expand residency training through a partnership with Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University. In August 2024, Sentara shared plans to increase the number of residency positions to more than 400 over the next six years. At the time of the announcement, Sentara hosted 240 residency positions.
