Developed in October 2011, the program allows Medicare to enter into contracts with individual accountable care organizations that agree to take responsibility for the quality of care furnished to individual beneficiaries. In return, the ACOs have the opportunity to share in savings realized through improved care.

To help healthcare organizations apply for the MSSP, Premier’s collaborative offers an MSSP pre-assessment tool, a comprehensive gap analysis based on application requirements, application support and access to best practices and lessons learned from successful applicants.

Applications for the next contracting period, which begins on Jan.1, 2013, must be completed and submitted to the Medicare program by Sept. 6, 2012, to be considered. Those interested in participating can learn more here.
