The study, published Jan. 2 in BMC Medical Education, examined websites, promotional materials and emailed program information for 24 PA-specific, post-professional doctoral programs.
Here are six findings:
- The majority of programs were less than three years old and all programs were accredited regionally.
- Seventy-five percent of programs were housed in private institutions.
- All programs were offered to students with a master’s degree, but two programs also offered bridge pathways of study.
- The most frequent credential awarded was doctor of medical science.
- Total credit hours ranged between 12 and 60 credits.
- The educational format followed a few themes but was different at each institution. However, all the programs emphasized leadership, academia and clinical practice advancement.
