Rigby police released the news update about Mr. Gray on the department’s Facebook page Sept. 25, stating he died of injuries sustained in an incident late last month.
Police said Mr. Gray was injured July 26 when a suspect fleeing from police in a pickup truck allegedly crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with the semi-trailer operated by Mr. Gray, ABC News reports. Mr. Gray, who was unconscious at the time, was transported to University of Utah Hospital.
Upon arrival, police sought to draw Mr. Gray’s blood to determine if he had illicit substances in his body at the time of the incident. A nurse, Alex Wubbels, RN, said it is against hospital policy to draw blood from a patient unless he or she has consented, is under arrest or the police provide a warrant.
A standoff ensued and Ms. Wubbels was forcibly arrested by police. However, no charges were filed against her. Video footage of the incident was made public earlier this month.
