Vanderbilt University Medical Center treats 6 patients, gunman following church shooting Sunday: 6 things to know

Six individuals were transported to Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt University Medical Center after an alleged gunman opened fire at Antioch, Tenn.-based Burnette Chapel Church of Christ Sunday morning, according to NPR.

Here are six things to know about the incident.

1. One person was killed and at least seven others were injured during the incident, police said. The alleged gunman, Emanuel Samson, 25, was among the injured. The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department identified the female victim as Melanie Smith, 39, according to NPR.

2. Mr. Samson allegedly entered the church from the rear entrance after fatally shooting Ms. Smith outside, police said. He injured six more victims before a church usher, Robert Engle, 22, reportedly tackled Mr. Samson to the ground, according to the Chicago Tribune. Mr. Samson allegedly shot himself during the incident, though police said it is unclear if he did it on purpose or not.

3. Mr. Engle, who also sustained injuries during the altercation, reportedly retrieved a gun from his own vehicle and held Mr. Samson until police arrived, the Chicago Tribune reports.

4. Police charged Mr. Samson with one count of murder, among other charges, later Sunday evening. He is being held without bond. Federal investigators also opened a civil rights investigation into the incident.

5. Police said Mr. Samson waived his rights and admitted to arriving at the church and conducting the shooting, according to the Chicago Tribune. He will appear in court Sept. 27.

6. VUMC, which treated six individuals, including Mr. Samson, said it will not release any statements on the shooting citing privacy concerns, Fox-17 News Nashville reports.
