Erie, Pa.-based Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and Jacksonville (Fla.) University opened the region’s first four-year medical school July 17.
The $50 million facility is located within Jacksonville University’s Medical Mall, an innovative hub for healthcare education, training and clinical services on the university’s Arlington campus. The medical school joins existing health sciences programs and clinical facilities, according to a July 17 university news release.
It will welcome its inaugural class of approximately 75 students who will pursue a doctor of osteopathic medicine. Third- and fourth-year students will receive clinical training from Baptist Health, UF Health St. Johns and AdventHealth, as well as Island Doctors, Wekiva Springs Center and Angel Kids Pediatrics.
Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine is the nation’s largest medical college and only osteopathic academic health system with campuses in Bradenton, Fla.; Erie, Pa.; Greensburg, Pa.; Elmira, N.Y.; and Jacksonville, Fla. It also maintains clinical education agreements with more than 100 hospitals and healthcare facilities across 10 states.
