Aegis Health Group, a company specializing in hospital business development strategies, provided the following seven tips to ensure confident, trustworthy relationships between hospitals and physicians.
1. Even if it is not possible to resolve the issue at hand immediately, respond honestly to physicians’ concerns. Listen, and let them express their frustrations.
2. Learn more about each physician’s values. Ensure they understand what hospital offerings coincide with those values.
3. Involve physicians in decision-making and planning around clinical services. Make sure they know their ideas are heard, and when possible, implement those ideas.
4. Don’t waste physicians’ time with unproductive meetings or activities. Avoid physician-only committees. Instead, establish workgroups comprised of administrators and physicians.
5. Communicate openly, and provide the physicians with support.
6. Provide opportunities for leadership and professional development.
7. Maintain integrity, and keep promises made to physicians.
