The 519-bed state-owned University Hospital has a reputation for charity care that has contributed to its $116.9 million in debt, according to the report. Its future has been unclear after Gov. Chris Christie signed legislation last year that reorganized state colleges and universities, including splitting UMDNJ’s medical and dental schools to be run by two private universities, according to the report.
University Hospital’s 3,000-person staff would continue to be employed by the state and keep their benefits. The request issued last week called for “fair and reasonable” bids from non-profit organizations that have run at least one New Jersey hospital.
