Hospital officials issued a “brief email statement” yesterday, noting that it would dismiss approximately 70 medical residents, according to the report. New York Downtown has been affiliated with Weill-Cornell Medical College.

Officials said they will instead focus hospital resources on “providing enhanced healthcare services to its communities” rather than the residency program, which will officially close June 30.

NewYork-Presbyterian Health System in New York City recently filed a certificate of need to New York’s State Health Department to take over New York Downtown. Also, less than a month ago, New York Downtown’s president and CEO, Jeffrey Menkes, stepped down.
