All Virginia hospitals with an emergency department will be required to have at least one physician on-site at all times, ABC affiliate WRIC reported April 16.

Under current state law, hospitals with emergency departments must have a physician on-call, but not necessarily on the premises, at all times. The two bills, which passed out of the General Assembly and were signed into law, require a physician to be in person at the hospital at all times.

The law goes into effect in July 2025.
