Medical Practice Managers Report Rising Costs, EHR Implementation as Major Obstacles in MGMA Survey

Medical practice managers struggle with the day-to-day challenges of rising operating costs, uncertainty about Medicare reimbursement rates and selecting and implementing an EHR, according to the third annual MGMA report “Medical Practice Today: What Members Have to Say.”

The report saw several changes from previous years. “Managing teamwork and group dynamics among physicians,” an issue that was introduced to the list this year, debuted at number eight, while “implementing a patient-centered medical home model of care” moved from number 22 to number 12.

The recession continues to adversely affect medical groups: study participants reported a decrease in revenue, an increase in uninsured patients and cuts in operating budgets. The top five recession-based issues in 2010 were the same as those in 2009, though the percentage of respondents who dealt with high levels of uninsured patients dropped this year.

Report data was gathered from 1,798 individuals from February 12 to March 5, when members participated in a web-based questionnaire about their practices and the effect of economic downturn.
