The new arrangement will go into effect in July. Lifespan President and CEO Timothy Babineau, MD, called the partnership a “next-generation” accountable care organization, according to the report.
Under the arrangement, Lifespan physicians will care for approximately 21,000 people in Rhode Island who are enrolled in UnitedHealthcare’s employer-sponsored health plans, according to the report. Providers will then be paid based on quality rather than volume.
Neither the payor nor health system could yet provide an estimate for how much savings the contract might generate, nor describe how savings will be shared among physicians, according to the report.
