The model legislation, called the “Interstate Medical Licensure Compact,” aims to make medical licenses more portable so physicians can reach more patients, especially in underserved populations. It will maintain oversight, accountability and patient protection, according to a statement.

Lawmakers have formally introduced the compact in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Vermont and Wyoming.

The progress of the compact can be tracked on a website launched by the Federation of State Medical Boards.
