The annual rankings are based on six metrics, including cost of living, tax burden and climate for malpractice litigation. Idaho’s low cost of living, culture of independent physicians and relatively friendly malpractice climate made it the top place to practice for the second straight year.
The rankings do not factor cultural attractions or other lifestyle factors, which can leave states like New York, New Jersey, Washington, D.C., and Hawaii as some of the worst states to practice, given the high cost of living, tax burden per capital, malpractice award payouts per capita and disciplinary actions taken against physicians.
