The hospital program began in 2002 and now includes 91 hospitals in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The physician program includes about 4,600 physicians that provide care for 1.7 million Highmark members.
Major findings from this year’s report include:
• For every 100 patients discharged, there were 13.93 readmissions in 2012, down from 14.32 readmissions in 2011.
• In 2012, 29 hospitals participated in the surgical safety indicator. In those 29 hospitals, 739 inpatient and outpatient surgical site infections were averted, which represents a potential savings of more than $2 million.
• Providers participating in the program have improved generic prescribing rates from 46 percent in 2006 to 79 percent in 2012.
