Here are four things to know about Dr. del Mundo:
1. Known as “The Angel of Santo Tomas,” Dr. del Mundo was born in Manila in the Philippines in 1911. She said the death of her eldest sister at 11 years old to appendicitis inspired her to pursue her sister’s dreams of a career in medicine and dedicate her life to children’s healthcare.
2. In 1936, Dr. del Mundo became the first woman accepted into Harvard Medical School, which she received a scholarship to attend.
3. She went on to launch the first pediatric hospital in the Philippines in 1964, selling her house to finance the Manila-based hospital, which was renamed in her honor.
4. Dr. del Mundo died in 2011 at 99 years old after suffering cardiac arrest a few months before her 100th birthday, the report states.
