In August 2015, Hurley Medical Center opened a children’s clinic above the relocated Flint Farmers’ Market in the city’s downtown area. The change has improved Flint’s downtown area and turned it into a health and wellness district, according to the report.
The city has also utilized the assistance of Flint-based Uptown Reinvestment Corporation, a nonprofit formed to help redevelop the downtown area. In 2012 and 2013, URC purchased three vacant buildings, one of which is now used to house an expansion project by East Lansing-based Michigan State University College of Human Medicine.
Medical students had been completing their training at hospitals in Flint for years, but the expansion project allowed the school to accommodate more students and increase faculty. The new building houses classrooms, conference rooms, a lecture hall and clinical skills examination rooms. The once-vacant building is also home to a public health research initiative spearheaded by MSU.
