Each year, hospitals participating in the program receive payments for meeting certain quality improvement goals. If they fail to meet the goals, they lose out on that money, according to the report.
According to the Democrat and Chronicle, the improvement areas include improved heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia outcomes; patient safety; patient satisfaction; and efficiency measures.
The program has been in place since 2004. Excellus has paid more than $145 million to participating hospitals since its inception, according to the report.
