East Carolina University’s medical school to stay open despite budget cuts

East Carolina University’s Chancellor Steve Ballard, PhD, announced this month the Brody School of Medicine, based in Greenville, N.C., will remain open despite rapid decline in state support over the last 24 years.

In 1990, the school received 53 percent of funding through the state. This has declined to 21 percent today. The school will need more than $25 million in state funds over the next couple years, Dr. Ballard estimates.

The school is working with its clinical affiliate, Vidant Medical Center, to further integrate services to reduce costs, according to the announcement.
