The “Buying Value” collaborative will allow the participating companies and unions to have a firmer say in health coverage, according to the report.

The private sector coalition may align with Medicare’s accountable care organization program or try new initiatives such as lowering co-pays for patients seeking high-quality health services and professionals, according to the report.

Buying Value is an effort to switch from traditional insurance models to rewarding physicians and hospitals for value. The first phase of the Buying Value collaborative, slated for completion by Oct. 1, is to set quality measures.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is supporting the program by using databases to research high-quality health plans that fit the needs of the new collaborative.
