The training program was formed in response to a national shortage of cardiologists and an aging population in Peoria.

The fellowship will begin July 13, 2013, when three physicians will start the three-year program. The fellowship will be at full strength by 2015 with as many as nine physicians studying under cardiologists, according to the report.
