The main target of the cardiology programs’ competition is The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, which has a reputation for quality heart care. The hospital’s cardiology operations account for approximately one-third of the organization’s total surplus each year, according to the report.

Mercy Health Partners, St. Elizabeth Healthcare, TriHealth and UC Health — all based in Cincinnati — have created non-profit groups of employed cardiologists to increase patient volume, develop new specialties and recruit physicians. The competition may improve the range and quality of services available to patients.
