Stockton, Calif.-based University of the Pacific is opening a $150 million medical school.
The Pacific School of Medicine will be California’s first MD-granting institution outside of the state’s largest population centers, according to a May 28 university news release. There are 13 MD-granting schools in Southern California, the Bay Area and the Sacramento area.
The medical school, located on the university’s Stockton campus, will take up 100,000 square feet and will include simulation labs and specialized equipment. The first cohort of students will be welcomed in fall 2030, pending accreditation approval, and the school is expected to grow to 400 students by 2037. It also plans to create a specialized two-week, premed track that will serve about 1,800 high school students annually.
Pacific will be the 36th U.S. university to have schools of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and health sciences. It comes amid a wave of new medical schools opening and breaking ground across the nation in the past few years.
