The system applied for accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education last fall and completed the site evaluation in February, according to the report. An accreditation decision is expected in June.
If the residency program is accredited, it could produce up to six new physicians a year, with the inaugural class starting in July 2014, according to The Billings Gazette. About 24 Billings Clinic physicians, along with roughly 100 nurse practitioners and physician assistants, will serve as faculty for the program.
Billings Clinic hopes the future graduates from the residency program will stay and practice medicine in Montana, where many counties are experiencing a physician shortage, the report said.
