For the past five years, Montana has issued a report on the community benefits provided by the 22 largest non-profit hospitals in the states. Ten of the study’s hospitals are larger, prospective payment system hospitals, and the other 12 are critical access hospitals. Here are some other findings from the study.
• Collectively, the 22 hospitals studied provided more than $194 million in community benefits.
• Billings (Mont.) Clinic provided the most community benefit at $32.59 million in FY 2010.
• Subsidized health services, charity care and unreimbursed Medicaid costs represented the three largest areas of community benefit.
• Total tax exemptions for the 22 hospitals were valued at $58 million.
