Anthem Blue Cross to Pay $150k Over Data Breach Allegations

Anthem Blue Cross has reached a $150,000 settlement with California Attorney General Kamala D. Harris, resolving allegations that the company failed to protect Social Security numbers for its members.

The payor allegedly printed SSNs on letters that were mailed to more than 33,000 of its Medicare Supplement and Medicare Part D subscribers from April 2011 through March 2012 — a violation of a state law restricting the disclosure of SSNs.

Anthem notified those subscribers whose SSNs were visible through the envelopes and offered them a year of free credit monitoring services. Under the settlement, Anthem is also required to provide enhanced data security training for its associates and implement new safeguard and data management techniques.
